Julian Lennon, the eldest son of the legendary Beatles singer-songwriter John Lennon, says he and his father had a rather distant relationship.
"You have to realise that when Dad left, when I was between three and five (it was a bit of a process), it was just mum [Cynthia Lennon, John's first wife] and me," the 61-year-old musician and photographer told The Guardian on Sunday, January 5.
"We had nothing to do with the Beatles or Dad," he continued, explaining that when new content about the iconic band comes out, like Peter Jackson's Get Back, it's "It's news to me half the time."
Julian said he isn't "upset" about the difficult relationship with his father, and he credits that to his late mother. "I think it was Mum, watching how she handled what she was dealt with love and grace and positivity. I saw that that's the only way forward," he said. Julian noted that he has a great relationship with his half brother, Sean Lennon, the son of John and performance artist Yoko Ono.
"I'm thankful that Sean and I get on like a house on fire – we're best buddies and he tells me what he can [about the Beatles]," he explained. "But things are pretty secret on the Beatles front." Despite this distance from his famous father's history, Julian says he's "excited and impressed by what [the Beatles] did and continue to do. As a fan, I'm just as curious as anybody else, although I do find myself going, how is it possible that there's another Beatles film?"
Julian posted about his ongoing battle with skin cancer on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Wednesday, December 18, 2024. He updated his followers with news that he'd gotten "the all clear" and was cancer free on December 30, encouraging them to " take the time to get yourself checked out, so you too can have a worry free 2025... At least in regards to this area of health in your Life."
