As Jussie Smollett's legal saga continues to unfold, new allegations have surfaced about how the disgraced actor justified staging a fake hate crime in 2019. According to Nigerian brothers Abel and Ola Osundairo, who helped orchestrate the hoax, Smollett claimed that Hollywood A-listers frequently fabricate incidents for attention. Specifically, he cited Kim Kardashian's 2016 Paris robbery, which he alleged was staged-a claim with no evidence and categorically denied by French authorities.
The Osundairo brothers revealed these details during an interview on Fox & Friends, where they urged Smollett to finally admit guilt. "He made it seem like this is what Hollywood does," Abel stated, recounting Smollett's attempt to frame the hoax as a routine publicity tactic.
The fallout from Smollett's overturned conviction
This revelation comes shortly after the Illinois Supreme Court overturned Smollett's conviction on legal technicalities related to a prior deal with Cook County DA Kim Foxx. The decision has sparked widespread criticism, reigniting debates about privilege and accountability in the justice system.
Abel Osundairo criticized the initial sweetheart deal Smollett received, stating, "If it were a regular citizen, they wouldn't get this treatment. This shows there are two classes of justice in America, one for the powerful and one for everyone else."
The brothers also shared that while Smollett paid them for their role in the staged attack, he still owes them $500 a debt they doubt they'll ever collect.
Kim Kardashian's robbery: fact vs. fiction
Kardashian's representatives have yet to comment on Smollett's inflammatory claims. The 2016 robbery, during which masked intruders bound and gagged Kardashian at gunpoint in a Paris hotel, was extensively investigated by French authorities, resulting in multiple arrests and convictions.
The suggestion that the event was staged has no basis in fact. Yet, Smollett reportedly used this narrative to convince the Osundairo brothers to participate in his hoax.
Where does Smollett stand now?
Despite his overturned conviction, Smollett's reputation remains in shambles. The actor continues to deny his involvement, even after a contentious 2021 trial found him guilty of lying to police.
For many, Smollett's actions highlight the consequences of exploiting sensitive issues like racism and homophobia for personal gain. As the Osundairo brothers put it, "The real injustice is Smollett refusing to take responsibility."
