The Emilia Pérez team is celebrating as Jacques Audiard's film earns a record-breaking 13 Oscar nominations. However, the spotlight has also turned to discussions surrounding lead actress Karla Sofía Gascón, a Best Actress nominee. Renewed attention on past remarks has led to adjustments in the film’s promotional strategy, resulting in a reduced role for the Spanish actress in campaign activities.

Netflix adopts a cautious stance

According to The Hollywood Reporter, discussions have arisen between Gascón and Netflix, which holds the distribution rights for Emilia Pérez in the U.S., Canada, and the UK. At present, communication primarily occurs through her agent, Jeremy Barber. In response to recent developments, Netflix has made adjustments to its promotional strategy, including modifications to marketing materials and outreach efforts.

These measures suggest Netflix's focus on maintaining the film’s momentum as the final Oscar voting round approaches, with results set to be announced on March 3 in Los Angeles. Despite these changes, Gascón remains slated to attend the Oscars, where she is nominated alongside Fernanda Torres, Demi Moore, Cynthia Erivo, and Mikey Madison.

Gascón Addresses the Situation

Gascón addressed the situation on social media, expressing gratitude for the Emilia Pérez team and those who have supported her throughout her journey.

"For years, I have wholeheartedly dedicated myself to the Emilia Pérez family. Today, more than ever, I appreciate those who have recognized my work—the festivals, my colleagues, director Jacques Audiard, our producers, crew, and the press. Above all, I thank those who have understood and supported my journey," she shared.

She also reflected on the emotional impact of recent events, stating: "I have always been transparent about my experiences. For years, I struggled with my identity, seeking validation from others. But today, I embrace who I am. My only wish is to exist freely, create art without limitations, and continue moving forward. I feel I am being silenced. I ask Hollywood experts and journalists who know me and have followed my career—how do I move forward?"

Potential Appearance at the Goya Awards

With her schedule now open, Gascón may attend the Goya Awards on February 8 in Granada, where Emilia Pérez is nominated for Best European Film. While she is not personally nominated, her presence at the event would mark her first public appearance since recent discussions surrounding the film. Thus far, she has addressed the situation through a CNN interview and by sharing her reflections on social media.
