British fashion and lifestyle brand Laura Ashley has been acquired by Marquee Brands from global asset experts Gordon Brothers.
The strategic acquisition will retain the brand’s UK-based team and expands Marquee Brands’ global footprint with the opening of its first European headquarters in London. Founded in 1953, Laura Ashley was inspired by an exhibition of Women's Institute handicrafts at the V&A. The eponymous designer produced homewares, such as napkins and tablecloths on a hand printing machine designed by her husband, Bernard. The business ventured into retail in the 1960s. And, during the 1970s and 1980s, it became a hit across the globe - synonymous with timeless design, blending delicate florals and vintage-inspired motifs across hundreds of products and categories.
However, during the 1990s and 2000s, its fashion fell out of favour as women embraced more minimalist dressing and it focused its efforts on homewares. Over-expansion and a lack of vision then paved the way for its fall into administration in 2020. Shortly after, Laura Ashley was rescued by Gordon Brothers and last year made a return to fashion with a new spring collection. Under its new acquisition, Marquee Brands integrates Laura Ashley into its portfolio as a globally recognised brand with a fully licensed operating model spanning the US, UK, Japan, South Korea and other markets across Asia. By leveraging its global network, the firm is poised to "deepen Laura Ashley’s presence", driving new business across North America, Latin America, Asia Pacific, EMEA and other key regions. Heath Golden, CEO of Marquee Brands, said: "Laura Ashley’s licensed business model and robust group of high-quality partners makes the brand a seamless addition to Marquee Brands. We are excited to harness the strong affinity for this iconic brand and drive expansion across new platforms and partnerships." "With the existing UK team in place, we are primed and ready to leverage Laura Ashley’s seven-decade legacy to unlock its future potential as a full lifestyle brand innovating new products and categories, offering unique collaborations and engaging multi-generational audiences in key markets worldwide." The acquisition marks the culmination of a "transformative" year for Marquee Brands. Established in 2014 by Neuberger Berman, Marquee Brands is a globally recognised brand owner, licensor, marketer and media company. The business strategically works to harness and grow the value of its brands by partnering with “best-in-class” operators across multiple channels, geographies and product sectors. Its brand portfolio is organised into three verticals - Home & Culinary, Fashion & Lifestyle and Active & Outdoor - and encompasses brands such as Martha Stewart, Ben Sherman, Anti Social Social Club, Totes, Isotoner and Destination Maternity, amongst others.
