Lawns shouldn’t be rejected at this time of year because autumn’s cold weather has set in.

While it may seem like time to stash away the mower soon, don’t forget the essential step of autumn feeding.

October is a crucial month to fertilise your lawn for the harsh winter ahead.

Supplying the right nutrients now lays the groundwork for a vibrant comeback next year.

According to nature-loving writer Luminita Toma at Lawn Starter, the key nutrient to give your grass its deep vibrant colour is nitrogen.

She explained: “Nitrogen is the key element in achieving a dark green lawn. It aids in chlorophyll production (the pigment responsible for providing grass with its deep green hue) and also makes grass grow vigorously.

“No matter the type of grass you have, it needs just the right balance of nutrients to achieve a deeper green colour.”

With this in mind, gardening experts at retailer Southside Plants claimed that it’s “simple” to make a “homemade organic natural fertiliser”.

One homemade fertiliser recipe they recommended was to use coffee grounds and for this, you’ll need two cups of coffee grounds, five gallons of water and a spray bottle.

To make it, start by adding the two cups of used coffee grounds to the five gallons of water and leave overnight.

Afterwards, strain the liquid into the bottle and add it to the soil or spray it directly onto your lawn.

It isn’t the caffeine in coffee that stimulates healthy grass growth, but rather the nitrogen and trace minerals that coffee grounds contain.

These nutrients are released slowly, which is a big benefit over quick-release synthetic fertilisers.

The nutrients in coffee grounds are slowly broken down, allowing the turf to have a longer period of time to absorb them ensuring stronger turf for longer.
