LeBron James and his son, Bronny James, have done it. The pair became the first father-son duo to take the court together in NBA history during the league’s home opener on Tuesday (Oct. 22) as the Los Angeles Lakers faced off against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
It all went down with 4 minutes left in the second quarter as LeBron returned to the court and Bronny checked into the exhibition for the first time that night. The duo received a standing ovation from the Staples Cen—err, Crypto.com Arena, as both of the athletes tore off their warm-ups and took the floor. Bronny finished the game with 0 points and attempted two shots, while his pops finished with 16 points in the evening.
After the Lakers beat the Timberwolves 110-103, LeBron and Bronny spoke to the media about the experience, smiling as bright as the purple and gold uniforms they donned.
“That moment, us being at the scorer’s table together and checking in together, something I will never forget,” LeBron told ESPN during a post-game presser. “No matter how old I get, no matter how my memory may fade as I get older or whatever, I will never forget that moment.”
“I tried not to focus on everything that was going on around me and tried to focus on going in as a rookie and not trying to mess up,” Bronny told the media. “But yeah, I totally did feel the energy, and I appreciate the Laker Nation for showing the support for me and my dad.”
Leading up to the season opener, Bronny spoke with Men’s Health about his journey to the NBA and his health scare that almost derailed it. He expressed that he had to double down on his workouts and be more mindful of his body because he can’t afford to live a “normal” life anymore.
“I got real on top of my routines to get back to where I was,” detailed the 19-year-old. “I had to do breathing exercises and stuff. It was a total reset. I have to stay on top of my heart medications, and I got my heart pillow…My days aren’t normal anymore. I still feel like I’m getting back, I’m getting back to where I was…Everything I’ve been through over the years has prepared me for this.”
