Legendary Basketball Coach of Two Improbable Final Four Runs to Step Down: Report

College basketball coach Jim Larranaga, who led the University of Miami to its first-ever Final Four run in 2023, and coached underdog George Mason to the Final Four in 2006, is stepping down according to a new report.

Michelle Kaufman of the Miami Herald reported Thursday that Larranaga's announcement could come as early as today.

Larranaga, 75, has been the head coach of the University of Miami Hurricanes men's basketball team since 2011.

According to the Herald, Larranaga was under contract through the 2016-17 season. He had a 274-174 record since leaving George Mason for Miami, making him the winningest coach in program history. In 14 seasons, Larranaga led the Hurricanes to six NCAA Tournament appearances, including four trips to the Sweet 16.
