Letterkenny producer New Metric Media has tapped SiriusXM Canada veteran Ben Miner to launch a new division to drive into standup comedy and podcasting.
Miner served as manager of comedy, sci-fi and gaming as part of SiriusXM’s comedy channel in Canada, and will become vp of standup and podcasts at New Metric Media, effective Jan. 2025. He will be charged with developing TV comedies and podcasts around top comics brought onto the New Metric Media roster, while also expanding opportunities in live comedy performances.
The Toronto-based indie producer is best known for the Hulu and Crave original comedy Letterkenny, the spinoff series Shoresy, the CW and CTV comedy series Children Ruin Everything and the Crave comedy Bria Mack Gets A Life.
New Metric Media isn’t ready to reveal standup talent tapped to kick off the division under Miner, who will report to company founder and CEO Mark Montefiore. Miner will also look to generate live standup comedy gigs for top comedic talent, while also producing original audio and video content for New Metric Media’s direct to consumer channels.
And Miner will support New Metric’s new digital studio operations in downtown Toronto.
“With Ben’s passion for comedy and extensive experience in broadcasting and content development, we’re well-positioned to expand New Metric Media’s work with comedic talent globally and establish a strong presence across all parts of the comedy ecosystem. Ben’s leadership will be key as we bring new voices and unique comedy content to audiences everywhere,” Montefiore said in a statement on Wednesday.
Canada’s top comedic stars, from Jim Carrey and Mike Myers to Will Arnett and Howie Mandel, tended to go south to Los Angeles to expand their careers. New Metric Media is among a slew of local Canadian producers looking to keep local talent at home, or working both sides of the border and an increasingly global entertainment business.
It helps Miner is a veteran standup comedian, having performed across Canada and the UK over a 25-year career.
