Liam Neeson has revealed he wants to retire from filming action movies very soon.

The star, famed for his performance in the Taken action movie series, is now 72 and while he admits he is still well able to film a fight scene, he knows it must end at some stage.

He said he is thinking about giving it up towards the end of next year.

“I’m 72 — it has to stop at some stage,” said Liam, who performs in his own fight scenes but leaves the more intricate stunt work to collaborator Mark Vanselow. “You can’t fool audiences. I don’t want Mark to be fighting my fight scenes for me.”

When might he retire from action packed films then?

“Maybe the end of next year. I think that's it,” he told People Magazine.

While he will step back from action movies sometime in the next few years, his legacy will never be forgotten, as demonstrated by a hilarious experience the Ballymena native had recently in the US. He reported for jury duty and was recognised by the clerk, who quoted one of his most well-known lines at him.

"He’s calling, I don’t know, 55, 60 of us. He gets to me, but all I’m hearing is, ‘I have a particular set of skills. Skills that would make me...’ And I thought, ‘Oh f--- no,’ ” Liam recalled, referencing his famous monologue from Taken.

“It was actually really sweet and flattering. As I was leaving, people started to applaud."

Liam is now set to appear in a new comedy film alongside Pamela Anderson, but it definitely won't be the first time he's tapped into his comedic side.

Fans of Channel 4 's Derry Girls will remember his hilarious cameo in the third season of the show as he played a RUC inspector interrogating the girls.

Derry Girls director Michael Lennox found it "nerve wracking" calling him ahead of his appearance, as he told RSVP Live: “It was pretty nerve racking. We had a phone call with him the night before, and just that voice."
