Freaky Friday fans are in for an “Ultimate” surprise in the upcoming sequel.
Lindsay Lohan stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote her upcoming Netflix Christmas movie Our Little Secret. While speaking with the late night host, she teased a little bit about Freakier Friday, coming out next summer.
When Jimmy Fallon asked if there would be new music in the sequel, Lohan said, “Pink Slip is back together, the band! Yes!” referring to the group that Anna (Lohan) fronts with her friends, Maddie (Christina Vidal) and Peg (Haley Hudson).
Lohan, Vidal and Hudson aren’t the only Freaky Friday stars returning for the upcoming project, which wrapped production in August. Jamie Lee Curtis, Chad Michael Murray, Mark Harmon, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky and Rosalind Chao are also set to return. They join newcomers Manny Jacinto, Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan.
“Jamie and I, even at the table read, we were just smiling so big,” Lohan recalled. “I don’t think we were acting well because we were so happy. But, the movie is funny. It’s really funny.”
Freakier Friday picks up years after Tess (Curtis) and Anna switch bodies in the first one. Now, Anna has her own daughter and an almost-stepdaughter. “As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice,” the film synopsis reads.
The rest of the plot details are being kept inside the magical fortune cookie, but one more tidbit of information is known: Jacinto will portray Anna’s husband, which is unfortunate for those who were hoping for Anna and Jake (Murray) to still be together in the Freaky Friday sequel.
Andrew Gunn, who serves as a producer on the upcoming film and also produced the first one, previously said that for Freakier Friday, the team wanted to explore the situation when mothers and daughters face conflict when the daughter has her own child.
“Trying to find an idea that also serviced Jamie and Lindsay but also worked in all these other characters, was one of the hardest things to do, but I’m telling you Elyse [Hollander], the writer, just came up with this super funny, heartwarming idea,” Gunn explained in a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter for the 20th anniversary of Freaky Friday. “I didn’t know what a sequel would be 20 years ago, like it would be Harry switching with grandpa or something, but all of a sudden, 20 years later, it’s like, ‘Oh, actually, [a sequel] could work.’ So, I think, time gives it more room to actually become something.”
Curtis also serves as a producer, alongside Kristin Burr, who also worked on the original film. Lohan, Nathan Kelly and Ann Marie Sanderlin will executive produce the project, directed by Welcome to Chippendales helmer Nisha Ganatra.
Freakier Friday hits theaters on Aug. 8, 2025.
