Lorde celebrated her 28th birthday in New York City, and while her friend Charli XCX didn’t appear to be in attendance, her pop phenomenon, Brat Girl Summer, may have inspired the party theme.
The New Zealand musician, who first shot to fame at just 16 years old, shared multiple stories from her birthday party over the weekend, including a shot of her blowing out a candle and her dining room table, which was full of eye-catching items.
Complete with chewing gum, empty wine glasses and bottles of liquor, the table also had a bowl full of cigarettes, lighters, an ash tray and a ceramic dish with what looked to be rolled joints sitting in it.
What exactly was in the joints remains unclear.
In the state of New York, a legal adult can have up to 85gm of cannabis and up to 24 grams of concentrated cannabis outside of their home for their own use, and 141gm of cannabis inside their home.
While Lorde, real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor, didn’t say whether the party was brat-themed, it fits the definition of the viral trend and aesthetic, which combines a party girl lifestyle with a polished edge.
Other snaps from the party show the Royals singer looking very happy as her friends looked to be singing her happy birthday and holding a cake in front of her with one very tall candle.
Another image, taken in a blurry fashion, shows her standing in front of a window, smoking a cigarette, wearing a black tube top and grey skirt with two clips in the front of her hair.
It’s been a big summer for the star, who kicked things off by releasing Girl, So Confusing feat. Lorde, a collaboration between her and Charli that broke down the miscommunications in their friendship.
Sitting down with Zane Lowe last month, the British star said the original song was released before she had a chance to tell Lorde about it and was ‘ready for her to never speak to me again’.
However, the Kiwi Grammy winner had another idea and suggested they collaborate on a remix. The tune instantly went viral and the pair have since been spotted at multiple events together, with Charli XCX telling Zane: ‘We are partying as much as it looks like.’
Lorde’s birthday comes amid rumours she is working on her long-awaited fourth studio album with UK record producer Blood Orange, also known as Devonté Hynes, after they have been spotted together multiple times since February 2023.
The pair were seen together in September taking a stroll in New York and looked to be in good spirits as they chatted and laughed during their outing.
Devonté has previously worked with FKA twigs, Florence and the Machine, A$AP Rocky, and other top charting stars. However, the two musicians have yet to confirm whether they are collaborating or just good friends.
Lorde’s last album, Solar Power, was a collaboration effort with Jack Antonoff and was released in 2021, covering topics of summer escapism and her disdain for fame. It reached number one in Australia and New Zealand and number two in the UK.
