The fourth season of Netflix‘s Emily in Paris took while wild turn when Emily Cooper finally put an end to the love triangle between her, Gabriel, and Alfie. The character finds a new love in Rome — the dreamy Marcello — which suddenly puts Gabriel in the background of the storyline.

Lucas Bravo, who plays Emily’s on-again, off-again restauranteur boyfriend, has been quite vocal in the press about the direction of the character — and he doesn’t like it. “Reading the script this final season it was like ‘I don’t really like what he’s becoming and where the storyline is going,’” he told SheKnows at the Paley Center’s Emily in Paris: The Magic Behind the Scenes event on Sept. 18. “At the end of the day, I’m just an actor and I’m here to say my lines.” It seems that Bravo misses his character’s charming side.

“He was more fun to play when he was cheeky, playful, and in love,” he added. “I liked part one [of season four] because he was reconnecting with Emily, it was fun to play, but part two was weird, I don’t understand him anymore, but we’ll see.” The criticism felt heavy even though the season ended on an up note for Emily, it just sounds like Bravo is struggling to figure out where he fits in the Emily in Paris landscape.

His criticism has been heard loudly and clearly by the cast and crew, and his harsh words might find him without a job for the fifth season. “The show will go on with or without Lucas. The show is Emily in Paris — not Gabriel in Paris,” an insider told Us Weekly. “Everyone is so upset about the remarks he made. There is going to be a lot of tension.”

Bravo didn’t just air his complaints to us, he also spoke with IndieWire in October about his discontentment with the streaming rom-com. He believes Gabriel has been “slowly turned into guacamole” and the storyline is suffering from a “lack of risk.” He wasn’t done though; Bravo had more complaints to air. “The ‘sexy chef’ was very much part of me in Season 1 and we grew apart season after season because of the choices he makes and because of the direction they make him take. I’ve never been so far away from him,” he added while noting that Emily in Paris “kind of became not fun for me to shoot.”

The French actor’s contract ended with Season 4, so his job could be in jeopardy for the next season, especially if creator Darren Starr takes his ongoing whining to heart. Emily and Marcello could be riding off into the Roman sunset as she leaves Gabriel far behind.
