Lucy Kennedy says becoming a mum helped her career rather than slowing it down

Lucy Kennedy has said that becoming a mum has been nothing but beneficial for her career.

The broadcaster has said that becoming a mother to her three children has "softened" her, but she did admit that she suffers from mum guilt.

She is a parent to son Jack and two daughters, Holly and Jess.

While certain celebrity mothers have said that becoming a mum slowed down their careers, Lucy is grateful for how it has helped her.

“I actually think it helped me in so many ways,” she said. “When you become a parent, it actually broadens your scope for work… For me, personally, I think it kind of gave me more strength.

“I was able to relate more. And I also think it taught me greater empathy. I think it’s made me a better interviewer… parenting has softened me as a person.”

After realising how quick the time flew by after having her first child, Lucy stopped working after welcoming her second in order to spend as much time with her as possible. However, speaking to the Irish Independent, the Classic Hits presenter said even then she still felt guilty.

“I remember having the guilt [because] I didn’t really have that much money to do things other than walk down the pier or bring them to the park," said Lucy.

“And then when I started working again, I felt guilty that while I had money, I didn’t have the same time. I honestly think as women… we’re constantly guilty.”

As her children enter the teenage years, she admitted parenting has gotten more difficult in a way.

“It’s harder in a different kind of way. It’s more mentally exhausting because they are young people,” she said.

“They have their needs, their questions, their challenges and their own opinions. And I can’t just say, ‘Go and sit on the naughty step’... The younger stage is more physically exhausting, and the older stage is more mentally exhausting.”
