Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is recovering from a brain hemorrhage in an intensive care unit of the Sirio-Libanes Hospital, officials said in a statement released in the early hours of Tuesday.

In a statement posted on the president's Instagram account a hospital spokesperson said "The operation went without complications" and confirmed Lula was in an intensive care unit.

How Did President Lula Injure His Head?

Lula underwent surgery for an intracranial hemorrhage after the 79-year-old leader complained of headaches that doctors believed to be the result of a fall in a bathroom at his home in October.

After the accident, Lula traveled from the capital Brasilia to be treated 620 miles south in Sao Paulo.

How is Lula Recovering?

After the accident in October, Lula was left with a cut on the back of his head, slightly above his neck. He had to have five stitches and returned to full duties days later.

At the time, Lula described the accident as "serious."

During a telephone call that was shared on social media, Luiz Caetano, candidate for the Mayor of Camaçari reported Lulu as saying "I am fine, I had an accident, but it was my fault. It was serious but it did not affect any sensitive area."

"I'm taking care of myself … The doctors said I had to wait at least three or four days to find out how much damage the blow had done," Lula said.

Lula canceled a trip to Russia for a BRICS summit after the accident.

He also missed the United Nations COP29 climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Five Officers Arrested Over Coup Plot To Kill Lula

Meanwhile, Brazilian authorities arrested four military personnel and one police officer last month, accusing them of being involved in plans to assassinate Lula while overthrowing the government following the 2022 elections.

The plot is alleged to have included plans to kill Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, according to police statements.

The arrests, which were part of a larger investigation, followed three search and seizure operations and five arrest warrants having been issued.

Authorities also confiscated the suspects' passports and imposed restrictions on their communication with others.

When Will President Lula Leave Hospital?

Sirio-Libanes Hospital held a news conference at 9 a.m. local time on Tuesday to discuss the surgery.

The news conference was broadcast live from Lula's Instagram account.

Minister Paulo Pimenta, from the Secretariat of Communication, said that the procedure took place as planned, as reported by Brazilian news site JOTA.

He said that the president would remain in hospital for a few more days but that his condition was stable and under control.
