Lyle Menendez’s estranged wife, Rebecca Sneed, clarified that his involvement with a 21-year-old woman is “not a cheating scandal.”
“Lyle and I have been separated for a while now but remain best friends and family,” Rebecca, 54, wrote on the Facebook page she manages for Lyle, 56, on November 21. “I continue to run his Facebook pages, with input from him, and I am forever committed to the enduring fight for Lyle and Erik’s freedom, as has been so evident over the years.”
Similar news was reported by People on Wednesday, November 27, when a source told the publication that Rebecca and Lyle “have been broken up for a while.” The insider also revealed the woman’s name as Milly Bucksey, a college student from Manchester, England.
Lyle and Milly reportedly became involved after she wrote to him while he was behind bars. However, the source claimed that Milly had “only visited him once in jail.”
Lyle and his younger brother, Erik Menendez, were convicted in 1996 for the murder of their parents, Kitty and Jose Menendez, in 1989. They were both sentenced to life in prison without parole, but both men have been adamant that the killings were an act of self-defense. Lyle and Erik, 54, claimed that their father had sexually and emotionally abused them over the years and Kitty allowed him to do it.
Rebecca and Lyle met after the two began corresponding via letters while she worked as a magazine editor. They tied the knot in the visiting room of the state prison where Lyle was serving his time in 2003. Lyle has been open in the past about the “guilt” he felt for the public’s perception of Rebecca because of her marriage to him.
“People are judgmental, and she has to put up with a lot,” he told People during a January 2017 interview. “But she has the courage to deal with the obstacles. It would be easier to leave, but I’m profoundly grateful that she doesn’t.”
However, Lyle also admitted that his marriage to Rebecca was “complicated” at times.
“I’ve found I can have a healthy marriage that is complicated and built around conversation and finding creative ways to communicate, sharing, without all the props that are normally there in marriage in terms of going out to dinner and having as much intimate time together and so on,” he said during his appearance on ABC’s Truth and Lies: The Menendez Brothers.
The news of Rebecca and Lyle’s separation came just weeks after Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón formally recommended that they be resentenced and given the possibility of parole. While the resentencing hearing was originally scheduled for December 11, it was announced on Monday, November 25, that it had been pushed back until after the holidays. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Jesic made the decision to delay the hearing so he could have more time to go through 17 boxes of evidence. Jesic also wanted to give District Attorney-elect Nathan Hochman more time to review the case.
The resentencing hearing has now been scheduled for January 30 and 31, 2025.
