Madelyn Cline has joined Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz in Day Drinker, the action thriller Marc Webb is set to direct for Lionsgate.
Cline, who will reprise her starring role in the Netflix series Outer Banks in its upcoming fifth and final season, is also set to star in Sony’s I Know What You Did Last Summer and Amazon MGM’s The Map That Leads to You.
Day Drinker marks Depp’s most mainstream project in years following controversies amid his divorce from Amber Heard. It centers on a cruise ship bartender meeting a mysterious day drinker—only for both of them to find themselves entangled in a criminal underbelly, and connected in unexpected ways. The film is produced by Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, producers of the John Wick franchise for Lionsgate, Adam Kolbrenner and Zach Dean.
Chelsea Kujawa is overseeing the project for Lionsgate. Dan Freedman negotiated the deals for the studio.
Dean, who has made a name for himself in the action genre with Tomorrow War, Fast X and the upcoming thriller The Gorge, wrote the original spec screenplay. Kolbrenner and Dean’s film The Gorge for Apple TV+/Skydance will be released next week.
Day Drinker is the second recent collaboration between Lionsgate and 30WEST, which also teamed for Power Ballad, a music-themed comedy directed by John Carney which stars Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas.
30WEST will also executive produce Day Drinker, a Thunder Road/In.2 production that marks the fourth time Depp and Cruz have worked together, after Blow, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Murder on the Orient Express.
Cline is represented by CAA, and Entertainment 360.
