Man Sees Tourists in Tiny Boat on Shark-Filled Waters—Takes Quick Action

13 hours ago 3

A man in Australia was left baffled as he tried to warn non-locals about sharks in the water they were on, only for them not to care.

Diogo Grecco Giglio, 32, lives in the Gold Coast of Australia, and knows the dangers that can lurk beneath any given body of water.

Where he lives, on the banks of a large canal, is also home to what he described to Newsweek as "bull sharks and other types of sharks."

But this wasn't a problem to a set of British tourists who took to the waters on a small raft, even as Grecco Giglio shouted out a warning to them.

In a video to his TikTok account @diogogiglioo in December, Grecco Giglio stands at the edge of the bank, calling out to a group sitting on a raft and sailing down the canal.

"You guys know there are sharks in there?" he shouts, as one of them calls back simply: "Yeah."

"You guys are not afraid?", he calls, and they reply: "Nah."

Grecco Giglio then tells the camera: "My God, look at this. That's crazy. They're not even afraid."

The Britons tell him they're going fishing, as Grecco Giglio says "people from the U.K. are wild"—and then points out a ripple under the water close to him, which he says is a shark.

In a follow-up video, he said he learned they were from Liverpool, and had been staying in the area close to his home.

He told Newsweek: "These waters are full of sharks and nobody swims. These British tourists are very brave to be in a small boat to go fishing.

"It's not very common seeing people disregarding the danger in there," he said, though he revealed that another time, he saw a man actually swim into the water to save his boat, which had become unmoored.

"I would never swim in there," he admitted, adding people would be "brave" to do "any activity in these waters."

TikTok users were shocked by the clip, which has been viewed over a million times, as he captioned it "British people are wired differently" and "Seriously, how brave are they?"

One British commenter joked: "Sharks won't bite us we taste of sarcasm and bad choices."

And another wrote: "It's true we fear nothing, I once ate toast in bed ad slept in the crumbs."

One suggested the British tourists "100 percent didn't know there were sharks but now they're too embarrassed to get out."

And one was skeptical that there could be sharks in what they described as a "river," but as another pointed out, the canals are from the ocean and are known for having "pretty solid bull sharks."

The City of Gold Coast government website confirms this, advising residents and visitors to only swim at patrolled beaches and dedicated swimming enclosures, as "dangerous" animals including stingrays, jellyfish, catfish, stonefish and indeed sharks, can be found in the canals.
