A man attending a wedding with his girlfriend ended up making quite an impression on his fellow guests for reasons entirely unplanned.
While some wedding traditions are less practiced today than they were decades ago, there are still some unwritten rules guests are expected to abide by, particularly when it comes to how to dress.
If the invite has a formal dress code, most believe guests should abide by it. In a 2023 YouGov poll of 1,000 U.S. adults, 79 percent of respondents said it was "always or usually inappropriate" for someone to dress casually despite a dress code.
But guests need to be wary not to upstage the bride and groom. In the same survey, 77 percent of respondents agreed that it was "always or usually inappropriate" for guests to wear an outfit more extravagant than the happy couple's.
When Joel Blackman attended a recent wedding in Kent, England, with his girlfriend, Jasmina Rennie, he ended up doing a little bit of both, though purely by accident and in a way that had everyone in hysterics.
Rennie told Newsweek it all started when her partner forgot an essential part of his outfit for her friend's wedding.
"The night before the wedding, he realized he didn't have any smart shoes," she said. "Then he remembered he might have some in his car, and luckily he did."
A fashion disaster was averted, and Rennie and Blackman had a great day celebrating what was a happy occasion for all involved. However, as evening rolled around, Blackman suddenly made an alarming discovery: He was wearing odd shoes.
In a video posted to Rennie's TikTok account, jasminarennie, Blackman highlighted the hilarity of the situation: The two shoes were markedly different. One was black and the other blue. More significantly, one was size 9 while the other was size 10.
Rennie said Blackman might have gone the whole day without noticing this had he not "been on the phone and looked down to realize."
The comedy of the situation was compounded further by the fact that several of the guests had already noticed Blackman's odd shoes and must have simply assumed it was a deliberate fashion statement.
"Other people did notice too and didn't even ask him why he had odd shoes on until he had noticed it himself," Rennie said.
Whatever the case, Rennie said Blackman's fashion faux pas certainly helped him make a big impression on those in attendance. "It was my friend's wedding I know from college, which is even funnier as Joel only met the bride and groom that day," she said.
Fortunately, everyone involved was able to see the funny side. "It didn't impact his enjoyment of the day," Rennie said. "We are both very chilled people, so just laughed it off and made a TikTok about it."
