Toronto Maple Leafs center John Tavares is headed to injured reserve for at least one week after sustaining an injury in Wednesday's practice.
"Tavares out a least a week after practice injury from yesterday," NHL insider Elliotte Friedman said on X.
According to the Leafs' public relations team, Tavares has a lower-body injury.
During a corner drill, Tavares' left skate was crossed up with defenseman Chris Tanev and he fell to the ice in somewhat of a scissor split.
Tavares was visibly shaken up, but returned to his feet on his own and skated off the ice.
The Maple Leafs will feel the immediate impact of losing Tavares, as the former captain has been a key contributor this season, tallying 20 goals and 22 assists for a total of 42 points in 44 games.
With Tavares sidelined, the team has called up center Fraser Minten from the AHL.
According to the league's IR rules, Tavares will be required to miss at least seven days. This makes him unavailable for the Leafs' matchup against the Ottawa Senators next Saturday, Jan. 25.
