Mariah Carey Teases That Lee Daniels Will Direct Her ‘Meaning Of Mariah’ Biopic

Mariah Carey and Lee Daniels have reunited once again, but this time, for the film adaptation of her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey.

In an Instagram video of them shared on Wednesday (Nov. 13), Daniels teased, “Here we are again.” Carey chimed in, “And here we are.” The Star creator added that they’re “getting ready to go on another journey. Oh my God.”

He captioned the video, “A long time coming … I love this woman!”

Carey first shared that she was developing a TV series inspired by her bestselling memoir back in November 2022 and was in search of the perfect person to portray her onscreen.

“I’m here to do anything we need to do. I own all my old masters,” Carey explained to USA Today. “I don’t think it’s about ‘cast the girl who sings the Mariah Carey style,’ whatever that is. It’s about casting a great actress with a somewhat similar look and just making sure the acting is there. Because we have the music—they can sing along to it.”

We proposed that Tori Kelly should play Carey in a future biopic, but a young Carey can be played by rising star Liamani. Not only can she sing like the Grammy-winning powerhouse, but she Liamani also starred in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.

Carey and Daniels first worked together with Precious (2009). It may not have been her debut film role, but her performance as social worker Ms. Weiss is her most notable. They reunited for The Butler in 2013 and she even had a guest spot on Empire.

Of her cameo on the former Fox series, Daniels told Variety in 2015, “She has certainly proven herself, good lord. Repeatedly.” He was referring to her flop in Glitter (2001).
