Max George 'pops the question' to Maisie Smith with an onion ring

The Wanted's Max George has opened up about his health woes, revealing he's set for urgent heart surgery after a dash to A&E last week left fans fretting. The 36-year-old pop star looked under the weather as he took to Instagram stories, telling his followers: "Just prepping for the operation now, I feel like s***, but fingers crossed."

He previously shared with his 383,000 fans that docs discovered a 'block' in his ticker, sparking fears he might need a pacemaker to sort out his lower heart issues.

Max said: "I have a 2:1 block in my heart. Unfortunately, my heart rate hasn't picked up at all in almost a week. Because of this, we don't have too much time to wait, so it looks like I'm going to be in surgery way quicker than the doctors first thought. I may even be home for Christmas!"

Battling through some tough nights, the lad expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support: "The last few nights have been really rough, but I wanted to say that I'm absolutely humbled by all your messages of support. Both people I know and those I don't. It's given me a much needed boost and my family have been overwhelmed with support, which means more to me than anything," he added.

In the past, Max has been candid about his 'serious issues' with booze, but he's ruled it out as the cause of his current health scare, clarifying: "We've cancelled out a few things, like alcohol for example. I've not had a drink for four-and-a-half years, so it's not that."

He said: "I've got an issue with the bottom part of my heart, it's called a block. Until I have further tests we don't know what's caused it. It's a bit of a mystery really, the hard bit is the waiting."

Max previously shared his health woes on Thursday, December 12, telling followers: "Yesterday I felt really unwell and was taken into hospital. Unfortunately, after some tests, they've found that I have some issues with my heart.

"I have a lot more tests to determine the extent of the problems and what surgery I will need to get me back on my feet. It's gonna be a difficult few weeks / months... and Christmas in a hospital bed wasn't exactly what I had planned! But, as always, I'm surrounded with love and support by my wonderful partner Maisie, her family, my family and friends.. and I'm 100% in the best place.", reports the Mirror.

Maisie Smith, his girlfriend of two years who is currently doing panto in Canterbury, is reportedly finding it hard to juggle work commitments and spending time with Max but is doing her best to be there for him.

An insider has described this period as a "worrying and distressing time" for the young pair, highlighting that 23-year-old Maisie just yearns to stay by his side constantly. Despite being tangled up in her panto commitments and not wanting to disappoint, she's reportedly told The Sun that she's finding the balance tough, managing to sneak in visits to be with Max around her packed timetable.

"All she wants to do is be by his bedside day and night, but she's committed to her panto show and doesn't want to let anyone down."

Staying glued to Max's progress, the source revealed: "Max is on her mind 24/7 and she wants more than anything for him to be better as soon as possible."

Despite the whirlwind of work and emotional struggles, Maisie still shared a snap on Instagram Story as she gripped Max's hand in the hospital, captioning it: "Got to see my wonderful man today. Proud of you @maxgeorge."

A smitten Max then reposted that precious moment with the words: "Thank you baby. I love you so much," capped off with a heart emoji.
