The New York Mets may have accepted the fact that Pete Alonso may not be back, according to SNY's Andy Martino. As Alonso remains unsigned and his suitors dwindle, a surprising team could swoop in to sign him.
While listing landing spots for Alonso after the free agency domino of Anthony Santander fell, Bleacher Report's Jack Murray noted that the Los Angeles Angels could sign Alonso.
"Three-time MVP Mike Trout has only made the playoffs once while two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani never made the postseason during his time with the Angels," wrote Murray. "With Ohtani leaving for the cross-town rival Los Angeles Dodgers last offseason, the Angels could use a splash. Alonso would serve as another notable name with Trout and could help the franchise reverse this negative trend."
Alonso is a four-time All-Star and one of the best sluggers in the sport. Pairing him with Trout could help get the Angels back in the postseason. The Angels have not had a track record of winning, but perhaps Alonso could be the piece that changes that.
Trout is an 11-time All-Star, nine-time Silver Slugger and three-time MVP. Alonso still holds the cards to his free agency, but teams may not be lining up to pay him big money. Teams that needed a first baseman have already filled the need.
The New York Yankees signed Paul Goldschmidt. The Houston Astros signed Christian Walker. The Diamondbacks traded for Josh Naylor and the the Cleveland Guardians signed Carlos Santana. Teams like the Seattle Mariners who could use a first baseman may not be able to afford Alonso.
If Alonso values the money more than winning, the Angels could be willing to make a much-needed splash to help Trout. Unfortunately for the Angels, signing Alonso may still not be enough to make them contenders, but it would surely be a move in that direction.
