The New York Mets have been quite busy this winter. They began the offseason with a blockbuster move to bring in outfielder Juan Soto on a contract worth nearly $800 million.
New York has also added players like Clay Holmes, Frankie Montas, Sean Manaea, and others. But the offseason is far from over in Queens.
ESPN's Jeff Passan recently reported on the Mets' offseason. Passan pointed out a few positions in which New York will likely look to upgrade and the bullpen was the most prevalent place listed.
"The Mets are still talking about adding an outfielder. And relievers. And a starter. The Winter of Soto is still cooking," Passan wrote.
Given how deep Mets owner Steve Cohen's pockets are, New York could go out and acquire the best reliever on the market. The best reliever on the market is undoubtedly San Diego Padres lefty Tanner Scott.
The Mets already have a closer with Edwin Diaz manning the role, but having another closer-type pitcher of the other handedness could be very beneficial. If Freddie Freeman, Shohei Ohtani, and Mookie Betts are coming up, you may want a southpaw to deal with Freeman and Ohtani.
The Padres did this in 2024 with Scott and closer Robert Suarez and it was very successful. New York could sign Scott to a three or four-year deal worth around $20 million per season to bring him to Queens for the next few years.
