The New York Mets were one of the top teams named in the sweepstakes to acquire Chicago White Sox ace Garrett Crochet. The Mets weren't willing to part ways with the prospects necessary to acquire the southpaw, so they whiffed and watched him land with the Boston Red Sox.
Now, the Mets will need to pivot to a backup plan or else their starting rotation is going to be a huge question mark.
FanSided's Zachary Rotman has named a few backup plans for the Mets to pivot to. Rotman named Walker Buehler of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Luis Castillo of the Seattle Mariners on his list. But above both of them was Mets free agent Sean Manaea. Manaea is projected to sign a four-year, $72 million deal, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
"As intriguing as Buehler and Castillo are, the easiest move that the Mets can make would be to simply re-sign Sean Manaea. They took a chance on him last offseason, saw it pay off handsomely, and should try to keep him in town for a while longer," Rotman wrote. The southpaw had a 3.47 ERA in 32 starts and 181.2 innings of work for the Mets, and only got better as the year went on."
Manaea, no matter the cost, should be one of the Mets' top priorities. Signing him and bringing slugger Pete Alonso back would cap off an incredible offseason that would leave the fan base thrilled for opening day.
