The New York Mets have quite an exciting -- and expensive -- offseason ahead of themselves. They have the richest owner in baseball, Steve Cohen, and it doesn't seem like Cohen is willing to stop at anything to build a monster roster.
Their free agency targets include Corbin Burnes, Juan Soto, Blake Snell and Pete Alonso.
But ESPN's Jeff Passan recently listed signing Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Willy Adames as the Mets' "perfect transaction" for this offseason.
"Patience is difficult for a team that hasn't won a World Series in nearly three decades, and particularly hard for a franchise with a fan base as prone to letdowns as the Mets', but New York has ample options for perpetual success even without Soto," Passan wrote. "And it can start by shifting Vientos from third to first and forming perhaps the best left side of the infield in baseball."
This move would be made to shift Adames to third base while keeping Lindor at shortstop. This issue here would be the Mets would now be paying Adames shortstop money while playing him at third base.
This doesn't sound like a huge deal, but Adames may land a deal north of $200 million while the top third baseman on the market, Alex Bregman, should land a contract of around $120 million.
Still, adding Adames would be a huge get for the Mets, especially if they miss on Soto. If the Mets can land him for well under $200 million, it would be the perfect transaction and it would be a huge step in the right direction.
