The New York Mets have been trying to bring Pete Alonso back to Queens, but no deal has been reached between the two parties. As opening day gets closer, Alonso could move on and sign with another team.
CBS Sports' R.J. Anderson noted that Alonso could earn a three-year or four-year deal worth around $28 million-$30 million annually. However, as the Mets continue to let his free agency drag on, he could sign that deal elsewhere. Anderson predicted the San Francisco Giants would agree to a deal with Alonso.
"For the sake of providing an answer here, I'll go with the Giants of those aforementioned terms -- I just think Buster Posey could use another hitter, and that a former player GM is more likely to look past Alonso's flaws than some of the more analytical diehards," wrote Anderson.
Alonso is a four-time All-Star and one of the best power hitters in baseball. He has previously expressed his desire to stay with the Mets, but according to SNY's Andy Martino, the team may have accepted that his future is elsewhere.
"The Mets have pivoted to plan B, post-Alonso," Martino wrote on X. "They now consider it the most likely outcome that Alonso will sign elsewhere. They add Winker and will add a reliever, possibly a top one."
If Alonso's run with the Mets is over, the Giants could jump on the opportunity to add him. They already signed Willy Adames this offseason, and he is arguably the biggest home run threat at the shortstop position. Adding Alonso, who has hit more home runs than anyone in the National League since 2019, would be another great addition. Pairing Adames and Alonso could be the type of move that helps the Giants compete for a division title in a loaded National League West.
