Mets Tabbed 'Likely Landing Spot' For $152 Million Superstar Slugger

Pete Alonso's free agency has been quite the roller-coaster ride. At the beginning of the offseason, he was seen as the top first baseman in the class and quite a hot commodity. But his price tag was rumored to be around $150 million, which nobody was willing to pay.

With all the other top first basemen signing already, Alonso's market has dwindled to a few teams. The incumbent New York Mets have sat at the top of the sweepstakes for quite some time now.

Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller recently listed the Mets as one of the teams most likely to land Alonso despite some reports indicating otherwise.

"Even though there has been a lot of talk lately of the New York Mets being willing to move on from re-signing Pete Alonso, it still seems the Polar Bear will most likely return to Queens," Miller wrote. "Between their seemingly limitless budget, the success he has had there, their need for a corner infielder and the apparent lack of anyone else willing to shell out the big bucks to acquire Alonso, it all still points to the Mets eventually making it happen."

Alonso going back to the Mets makes the most sense. The Mets still have a gaping hole at first base and the two sides likely aren't too far apart on a deal. If Mets owner Steve Cohen is willing to cough up a few million more dollars, the slugger will likely return to Queens.

If not, the San Francisco Giants are another top suitor who could swoop in and steal the star from New York.
