Michelle Yeoh said the Wicked cast is celebrating but also “crying” after the 2025 Oscar nominations were revealed.
The actress, who played Madame Morrible in the movie musical, stopped by The View on Thursday, where panelist Joy Behar asked if she had yet to connect with her fellow castmembers after Wicked earned 10 noms earlier in the morning.
Among the film’s nominations were best picture, Cynthia Erivo for best actress, Ariana Grande for best support actress, best costume design and best original score. However, Jon M. Chu was shut out of the directing category.
“Yes! We are all crying for joy,” Yeoh, who previously won an Oscar for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once, said. “But, we must say we are also crying because Jon M. Chu, Alice Brooks — our DP — were not nominated, but the rest of us are celebrating. Best Picture, costumes, hair!”
Co-host Ana Navarro later added, “This is the second time they’ve passed over Jon Chu. He should’ve been nominated for In the Heights,” as Yeoh responded: “Yes, I agree with you!”
This year, Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez), Sean Baker (Anora), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), Coralie Fargeat (The Substance) and James Mangold (A Complete Unknown) rounded out the best directing category.
Wicked, which is based on the Broadway musical, explores the complex friendship between Erivo’s Elphaba (who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West) and Grande’s Galinda (who becomes Glinda the Good Witch). However, their friendship reaches a crossroads following an encounter with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The film grossed over $700 million at the global box office.
