Actress Miho Nakayama has been found dead in her bathtub aged 54.

Known for her role in 1995 film Love Letter, Miho found success as a singer in the 80s and 90s in the world of J-Pop.

In a tragic twist of fate, she ailed to attend work on Friday (December 6), and a staff member headed to her home to check on her, where they found her unresponsive in the bath.

Paramedics were called and confirmed she was dead at the scene.

It comes just hours before Miho was supposed to take to the stage for a performance in Osaka today, but it was cancelled before news of her death was made public.

Her agency confirmed the sad news on Miho’s website but have not shared a cause of death. A statement read: “Today, December 6th, our talent Miho Nakayama was found dead at her home.

“We are deeply sorry to have to suddenly announce this to all the people involved who have always looked after her and to all the fans who have supported her, but this incident was so sudden that we, too, are shocked and saddened.

“We are currently investigating the cause of death and other details.”

Born in Saku, Japan, Miho starred in a huge number of Japanese films and TV shows, including Like Shooting Stars in the Twilight and The High School Heroes.

Tributes have been pouring in for her online, with one fan writing: “Miho you’ll always be in my heart. Rest in peace.”

Another echoed: “Sad news alert! The fabulous Miho Nakayama has left us, and her agency's comments are understandably filled with sorrow.”

And somebody else posted: “So deeply saddened by the news of Nakayama Miho's death. Her music has been the soundtrack to many days of my life over the years. I'm grateful for the inspiration she has given me and for what her songs have represented for me. May she rest in peace.”
