Atlanta is expecting brutally cold temperatures for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, according to forecasts.
Why It Matters
Millions of Americans have been bracing for frigid temperatures that began as early as this weekend in the northern United States. The cold will creep south, and National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists believe it will make for a chilly start in Atlanta on Monday.
The cold weather forecast has already caused officials to change plans elsewhere in the nation, most notably the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, which will also occur on Monday and will be moved indoors.
What to Know
Multiple parades are planned in Atlanta to celebrate MLK Day. Atlanta is home to The King Center, a historical landmark which was established by Coretta Scott King in 1968 to preserve her husband's dream of nonviolent social change. It is also the final resting place for the civil rights leader.
Parades are taking place in Fayetteville, Forest Park, and at LaGrange High School, among other locations. The United Ebony Society is hosting a parade at the Gwinnett Justice Center in Lawrenceville that begins at noon.
Newsweek has reached out to the United Ebony Society by online contact form for comment.
However, wind chill will make the feels-like temperature in Atlanta drop to single digits on Monday morning, which could affect turnout or cause officials to change plans for the parades.
In a post shared on X, formerly Twitter, the NWS office in Atlanta warned that the feels-like temperature will be as low as 0 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit on Monday morning at sunrise. The low will be 17 degrees, and the high will be 31 degrees, a nearly 20-degree drop from Sunday's high of 49.
The temperature is expected to warm as the day goes on. The warmest time will likely occur shortly after noon, when forecasts anticipate the feels-like temperature will be 26 degrees.
The cold temperatures are following a period of rainy weather that was expected in Atlanta over the weekend. There is no chance of precipitation on Monday, and the weather in Atlanta is expected to be sunny.
What People Are Saying

High temperatures Monday - Wednesday will range 20 to 30°F."
What Happens Next
Temperatures in Atlanta and across the rest of the Peach State will likely be below normal for at least the next 10 days, according to a six- to 10-day temperature outlook published by the NWS Climate Prediction Center.
