A new mom told Newsweek how a brief moment of respite outside the family home proved short-lived due to the unintended actions of her "lawn-obsessed" fiance, when she was sprayed by the sprinkler.
The first few years of parenthood can be exhausting, particularly when it comes to sleep. A 2019 study from the journal Sleep found new parents face up to six years of sleep deprivation, with the worst period for rest thought to be around three months after the child is first born.
While the nights are brutal, the days offer little in the way of respite, leaving moms and dads caring for kids with only small windows of time in which they can pause for breath.
Leah Fedorko was enjoying one such window with her daughter Capri, who is around four months old, when disaster struck. "I had taken the baby for a morning walk, come back and sat on the step while FaceTiming my mom," said Fedorko.
What happened next was captured on Fedorko's doorbell camera and later shared to her TikTok. An on-screen caption explains how Fedorko was enjoying a "relaxing moment" after the walk when suddenly a sprinkler went off on the patch of lawn just in front of where she was sitting with Capri.
Fedorko can be heard screaming as she runs away from the water on the clip, taking Capri in the stroller with her. Mother and daughter beat a hasty retreat, with Fedorko letting out an audible "ah I hate him" as she disappears off screen.
She makes no bones about who is to blame for this either. "A day in the life of a girl whose house is surrounded by randomly timed sprinklers," Fedorko wrote alongside the footage. "10/10 do not recommend having a lawn obsessed significant other," she added in an on-screen caption.
He may have only been trying to maintain their lawn, but it would appear her partner's efforts have had unintended consequences. Not that Fedorko was all that upset after. "My fiance loves his lawn and has sprinklers and timers everywhere," she said, explaining why what happened happened. There was one silver lining too: "the baby didn't get wet," Fedorko confirmed.
Not to mention the fact that, while it may have been stressful at the time, the incident made for amusing viewing when watching the doorbell camera footage back later. That certainly appeared to be the consensus among those watching on TikTok.
"I'm laughing so hard still at this video I have tears," one viewer said. A second commented: "Leah I did not know this was you … and then I realized and am DYING" with Fedorko responding: " I knew you'd appreciate this."
One thing is for sure: Fedorko will think twice before stopping on those steps again or anywhere near the lawn in fact.
