Two roommates were confused when their socks kept going missing , having no idea where they were disappearing to.
Megan Norris, 22, is from the Bay Area and goes to school at UC Davis in California. She has lived with her roommate for three years and the pair recently discovered the huge pile of socks that had been missing for quite some time.
"We've always noticed socks/underwear going missing," she told Newsweek.
Norris shared a video to TikTok showing her roommate opening up the front of the washing machine to uncover the inner working of it. There, they found a huge pile of socks.
"At least we'll never fight about stolen socks again," she wrote in the caption of the clip, which has received 3.7 million views since it was first shared on November 15.
The women can be heard audibly gasping as the front of the washing machine comes off, then breaking out into laughter when they find the pile of socks and underwear.
"We decided to try to open it up because I heard sometimes stuff can go missing inside the machine," Norris told Newsweek. "We used literally just a hammer and screwdriver to pry open the front and then there was literally a mountain of missing socks and underwear.
"There was even stuff from the two girls who used to live there before us."
Clothes going missing in washing machines is a rather common occurrence. Jerrod Kappler, executive director of clothes care product technology at GE Appliances told Today.com in 2023 interview that such a buildup happens over a long period of time.
He said that the best way to prevent this is to not overload the washing machine with too many items of clothing.
Norris' video received over 300,000 likes and hundreds of comments, with people sharing their thoughts and reactions on what the roommates found in the machine.
"HOW do they get there!?" @lactoseintolerant asked, while @.sohcahtoa exclaimed: "SO THEY DO DISAPPEAR."
Skylar shared: "I don't understand how this is possible."
Meanwhile, Keldinicola wrote: "Ok so I'm not crazy."
"This is why I use mesh bags," said Ginefir. VoidPlasmd echoed this advice, writing: "It's worth getting those washing bags for items like those."
Ally joked: "so my washing machine is gaslighting me." While Tiffany said: "We been blaming the dryer the whole time."
Elsie shared: "Okay but can I go knock on my old apartment door and ask for my socks back now?? Cuz when I moved last year I had to throw out 5 socks I couldn't find mates for."
