When it comes to celebrity couples, some keep their relationship close to their chest while others have no problem letting their world into their romance. For Naomi Watts and Billy Crudup, who got married in 2023 after seven years together, they’ve been keeping their relationship under wraps but her new book will surely open them all up.

Among many things, Watts talks about wearing an estrogen patch for hormone therapy in her book, Dare I Say It: Everything I Wish I’d Known About Menopause. But while the patch seemed to be doing its job in helping menopause symptoms, it became a problem when Watts and Crudup started seeing each other.

“I was worried that if he saw [the patch] he would realize it meant I was menopausal: no longer a vibrant, fertile being,” she remembered, per Page Six. Unfortunately, it wasn’t just a matter of taking the patch off either. “The patch’s adhesive leaves a mark on the skin that’s very hard to get rid of,” she wrote.

As a result, on the night the two were supposed to be intimate for the first time, Watts ducked to the bathroom and scrubbed her arm “raw” in an attempt to remove any trace. After some time, however, not only was Crudup alarmed, but Watts made little to no progress.

“I came out mortified,” she wrote. “I stumbled and reached for words, but nothing would quite come out.”

“I didn’t want you to see it because then you would know I’m in early menopause, which means I am old,” she told Crudup.

Luckily, The Morning Show star took it in stride. “A smile broke over his face,” she said. “He seemed very relieved that the issue wasn’t a lack of desire. He told me he thought it was great I was taking care of myself, and he asked me how he could help.”

Then, he revealed he had been having some symptoms of aging of his own too. “Hey, if it makes you feel better: I’ve got gray hairs on my balls,” Crudup told her.

To Watts, those were “the most romantic words I’ve ever heard, onscreen or off. And that includes the script of every movie I’ve ever been in,” she added. “And even this same man’s very loving marriage proposal, which came seven years later.”

“I felt seen and heard and there’s so much love in that,” she added.

So while we weren’t exactly expecting a comment about his own genitals to top Crudup’s best moments, we can understand why the moment meant so much to her. Not only was Watts supported, but she realized she had a partner to live and experience this new phase with. Eight years later, it’s more true than ever!
