Ncuti Gatwa and Nicola Coughlan are set to face a dinosaur in the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special, as revealed in the latest trailer. The episode, titled 'Joy To The World', sees the Doctor, played by Scottish actor Gatwa, embarking on a journey through Earth's history where he encounters a character named Joy, portrayed by Bridgerton's star Coughlan.
According to the BBC, Joy stumbles upon a secret entrance to the Time Hotel, leading her to "danger, dinosaurs and the Doctor". The trailer kicks off with 32 year old Gatwa emerging from the Tardis, questioning "is this Christmas? " before a hotel employee informs him of their plans for "a special Christmas, everywhere, all at once".
Coughlan's character, donned in a red beret and jacket, is introduced alongside the Doctor as she brandishes a hairdryer at a briefcase-carrying Silurian in a hotel room. Other scenes show the Doctor wielding a lasso on a moving train and coming face-to-face with a dinosaur in a sunny locale.
The teaser also features him confronting an identical version of himself, dressed in the same attire. The Doctor, seemingly exasperated during his adventure, appears to tell himself: "You have to be mysterious all the time, that is why everyone leaves you, that is why you’re alone."
The episode will also feature guest appearances from Plebs actor Joel Fry as Trev and Sherlock’s Jonathan Aris as Melnak.
Gatwa and Coughlan, 37, previously shared the screen in the Greta Gerwig-directed film Barbie.
Sex Education's Ncuti Gatwa made his debut as the 15th Doctor in the final episode of BBC One's 60th anniversary celebrations, where David Tennant's Doctor bi-generated and split into two. In last year's festive special, The Church On Ruby Road, he was introduced to his companion Ruby Sunday, portrayed by ex-Coronation Street star Millie Gibson.
