A woman renovating her home was stunned by what she found when she ripped up the carpet on her stairs.
Shanna Herrick lives in West Virginia and started renovating her house around a month ago. When she got to tearing up the carpet on the stairs, she discovered an amazing secret, old wallpaper going all the way up the stairs.
She told Newsweek: "We are working to restore the wood floors including the steps as it was all covered in carpet. I was definitely shocked to say the least, of all the things I could have found under the carpet, I never thought it would be babies.
"Apparently it is from an artist named Bessie Pease Gutmann and was quite popular back in the day."
In a video shared to TikTok, which has received 2.4 million views since it was first posted on January 31, Herrick shows the wallpaper in more detail, revealing the images of children in old-timey clothing on each of the stairs.
"I don't know what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn't this," she wrote in the caption of the viral post.
In a follow-up video, she revealed to curious viewers that her house was built in 1928 and said that the staircase in question is the main staircase in the house.
"While I appreciate how unique and interesting it is, I personally find it unsettling and I will be removing it," she said. "Sorry to all who love it."
Home renovations are a hugely popular choice for American homeowners and according to Statista, the most popular type is interior room remodeling, followed by home system upgrades and outdoor upgrades.
Herrick's video received over 1,000 comments from other TikTok users who shared their thoughts and reactions to her unique discovery in her home.
"Those are AWESOME!!! Probably led to a nursery room. Rare find, too," said @user34592400889, to which Herrick replied: "If it was just to a nursery I could justify it, but it's our main set of stairs," with a crying face emoji.
"How could anyone cover up such beauty," said AndiGriff.
Meanwhile, Hope shared: "I kind of love it."
"OMG. That's amazing. I would leave them uncovered and enjoy," said @adelegoldsworthy.
Talia Rose wrote: "Ehhhh this is one of the few exceptions... I'd be covering that right back up."
Bruce shared: "I've removed countless stairs. Never once did I find something like this."
