The legal drama between Jay Z and Tony Buzbee is getting crazier and crazier. In a new lawsuit, Tony Buzbee is alleging that people hired by Jay Z pretended to be federal agents, in order to trick Buzbee’s former clients into suing their former lawyer.
This is a very serious accusation. Under federal law, The maximum penalty for impersonating a federal agent is three years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
Media Take Out confirmed that a second case has been filed by an individual alleging law firm Quinn Emanuel and lawyer Marcy Croft oversaw and coordinated a scheme to solicit and pay individuals to sue the Buzbee Law Firm.
As Media Take Out reported, Tony Buzbee and his firm filed a similar case last month, on behalf of a different plaintiff.
In the new case, a man named Jose Maldonado claims that he was contacted by investigators working for Roc Nation who “pretended to be federal agents.” After confirming that he was a former client of the Buzbee Law Firm, Maldonado alleges the investigators encouraged him to sue Tony Buzbee and offered him money to do so.
Buzbee Law Firm is currently pursuing an aggressive ‘Jane Doe’ rape case against Jay-Z, as well as a large number of sexual assault and abuse cases against Diddy.
The lawsuit claims that investigators have “confirmed” they were being paid by Roc Nation and were sending all cases they collected to lawyer Marcy Croft. They also ‘bragged that the lawsuits that would result would be in the press.’
Marcy Croft has, for many years, worked closely with the Quinn Emanuel law firm; Roc Nation, and Jay Z’s charitable efforts.
“The conduct alleged by Mr. Maldonado is illegal and unethical,” said attorney Tony Buzbee in a statement to the press. “We know investigators have gone all over the United States illegally contacting our former clients to try to entice them with money to sue our firm. According to Mr. Maldonado, we now know who is behind this effort. We won’t be intimidated nor deterred in our important work. I expect more lawsuits will follow as we continue to hear former clients report this egregious conduct.”
Another Buzbee client filed a similar suit in December against Quinn Emanuel and Marcy Croft of “barratry-solicitation and civil conspiracy,” a crime under Texas law, where the suit was filed. That lawsuit included a transcript of an alleged conversation in which people impersonating federal investigators solicited a man to file a legal malpractice suit against Buzbee and his firm.
