Most of the holiday wide releases are now available at home, with three coming out on VOD last week. “Moana 2” (Disney), by far the biggest in terms of box office ($454 million U.S./Canada so far), took the #1 spot at both iTunes (ranked by transactions) and Fandango (revenue).
Disney is charging $24.99 for a 48-hour rental, $5 more than usual. The other two — “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” (Lionsgate), released 18 days after it hit theaters, and Christmas Day opener “Babygirl” (A24) — both go for the standard $19.99
“Pantera” is #2 on both charts. “Babygirl” is #3 at iTunes, but #6 at Fandango. The psychosexual drama starring Nicole Kidman was possibly penalized with its Tuesday home release; Fandango covers Sunday-Thursday, though this didn’t hurt the other two new titles. “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” (Paramount), “Nosferatu” (Focus), and “Wicked” (Universal) rotate other slots among the top six at both iTunes and Fandango.
The remaining positions differ. Of note, Rachel Morrison’s directorial debut “The Fire Inside” (Amazon MGM), a Christmas Day wide release, is #10 at Fandango.
After two weeks at #1, “Back in Action,” Netflix‘s original spy caper film with Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz, just dropped to second place. It was #1 for the other six days in the week. Replacing “Back in Action” is “The Menu,” the 2022 Searchlight dark comedy with Ralph Fiennes leading an ensemble cast, many better known for their drama efforts, including co-star Anya Taylor-Joy. It’s curious to see “The Menu” programmed now with Fiennes as a leading Best Actor Oscar candidate for “Conclave” (Focus), more so since he is competing with Timothée Chalamet in Searchlight’s “A Complete Unknown.” Minor, perhaps, but in a close race, little things can make a difference.
“American Renegades” (2017), an $80-million European-produced Navy SEALs gold-theft recovery story that was never released in the U.S., is #3 on Netflix at the moment. This is the kind of film that feels interchangeable with the streamer’s originals, and often gets an initial sampling. “Lucca’s World,” a Mexican original, is #4. The family film follows a mother traveling to India for medicare for her son. Robert Zemeckis’ “Here” is #5 at the moment. Though the Oscar-winning director’s experimental drama failed at the box office, it managed to place at #2 for several days during the week behind “Back in Action.”
