Featuring on the cover of British GQ’s Men of the Year 2024 edition, the 57-year-old actress told the outlet that as she lived through her 50s, she had begun to feel things on a deeper level.

When asked why, Kidman said: “Mortality. Connection. Life coming and hitting you. And loss of parents and raising children and marriage and all of the things that go into making you a fully sentient human.

“I’m in all of those places. So life is, whew.

“It’s definitely a journey. And it hits you as you get older how — it’s a wake up at 3am crying and gasping kind of thing.

“If you’re in it and not numbing yourself to it. And I’m in it. Fully in it.”

Since losing both her parents, the actress has had to deal with her mortality in relation to her own children.

Kidman is mother to Isabellla, 31, and Connor Cruise, 29, whom she shares with ex-husband Tom Cruise, and teenage daughters Sunday Rose Urban, 16, and Faith Margaret Urban, 14, with husband Keith Urban.

“There’s the mortality aspect of life which, when you start to deal with that, it’s very heavy,” she told GQ.

“When you’re raising children you’re like, ‘I gotta stay here. I wanna see all of this.’ It’s devastating and beautiful and extraordinary.”

Her mother Janelle Ann Kidman died in September, with Kidman telling Vanity Fair this month that her mother was “my compass in a way”.

“It’s like losing that, but at the same time going, ‘OK, well, this is for her then’.

“She loved my career, she really did. She would be there through all the ups and downs, all of it.”

In the wake of their mother’s death, Kidman and her sister Antonia shared a joint statement on Instagram along with a series of family photos.

“My sister and I along with our family want to thank you for the outpouring of love and kindness we have felt this week,” Kidman wrote on September 13.

“Every message we have received from those who loved and admired our Mother has meant more to us than we will ever be able to express.

“Thank you from our whole family for respecting our privacy as we take care of each other.”

Her father Anthony died from a suspected heart attack after he fell in a hotel while staying in Singapore in 2014. He was 75 years old.
