A bus carrying dozens of people has veered off the road, landing in a lake in Norway, according to local media reports.

An entry from the Nordland Police District's log said it had received reports of a "serious" traffic accident involving a bus and that emergency services were on the way to the scene.

"Fatalities have been reported," Bent Are Eilertsen, Chief of Staff in Nordland Police District said, as reported by VG.

"It is unclear how many people are involved, but we are talking about 60-70 people," VG reported rescue leader Ørjan Delbekk at HRS Northern Norway saying.

Nordland Hospital, which was on red alert, said it had established a disaster team in response to the incident.

"Extra resources called in, personnel, ambulances, helicopter and aircraft resources to transport the injured to hospital," read an update on its website.
