The remaining members of One Direction reunited for the first time in almost a decade for their late friend Liam Payne.

Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson all attended the funeral of their former bandmate on Wednesday, November 20. The group looked somber as they each paid their respects to Liam. Along with Niall, 31, Harry, 30, Zayn, 31, and Louis, 32, they were accompanied by several other celebrity attendees.

Liam tragically died at the age of 31 after sustaining injuries in a fall from a third-story hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina on October 16. The “Story of My Life” singer was pronounced dead at the scene when authorities arrived around 5 P.M.

Alberto Crescenti, the Buenos Aires emergency services chief, revealed that the “Steal My Girl” artist suffered a “fracture at the base of his skull” and his injuries were “incompatible with life.”

On the day following Liam’s death, the former members of One Direction released a statement.

“We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing. In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say,” Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Harry Styles and Zayn Malik — who left the band in 2015 — said in a joint statement posted to One Direction’s social media pages on October 17. “But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly. The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam.”

The message was signed off by “Louis, Zayn, Niall and Harry.”

Liam and his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, had traveled to South America to see Niall perform on October 4. The “What Makes You Beautiful” artist was even seen dancing at Niall’s concert in a TikTok video shared by Kate, 25, days before his death. Kate ultimately decided to leave Argentina on October 14, as Liam chose to stay behind. She shared in a travel vlog that their trip was originally only supposed to last for “five days,” but it has spanned to almost two weeks. However, it was the last time she would see Liam alive.

Two days after Liam’s death, Kate shared a message with fans.

“Thank you for all of the kind words and love that has been sent my way,” Kate wrote on her Instagram Stories on October 18. “I have been at a complete loss. Nothing about the past few days have felt real. I ask and pray that you’ll give me the grace and space to navigate this in private.”
