One Tree Hill star Bethany Joy Lenz has issued an emotional apology to her parents after spending 10 years in a cult.

The American actress, 43, appeared on the podcast I've Never Said This Before With Tommy DiDario, when she thanked her parents for "sticking by" her despite previously being "estranged".

"I'm still scared of having vulnerable conversations with my parents... I'm scared of emotion," she said on the podcast.

"I don't know if I've ever just flat-out said to my parents, 'I'm sorry for what I put you through in those 10 years.' I think we've danced around versions of that but I don't think I've ever just flat-out said that."

She added: "Mum, Dad, I'm really sorry for what I put you through for those 10 years. It's been a while out of it now but… Thank you for sticking by me and for your patience and grace."

The star added that she will call them to speak further and apologise directly to them.

The actress has just written a memoir, called Dinner for Vampires: Life on a Cult TV Show (While Also in an Actual Cult!), about her experience in the ultra-Christian cult and as a star on the hit series, One Tree Hill.

She previously spoke about her experience in the cult while filming the TV show, saying she didn't realise she had been lured into a cult for years.

She told People about her colleagues' reactions when she spoke about her experience and situation, recalling, "I could see it on their faces."

"But I'd justify it, like, 'I couldn't possibly be in a cult. It's just that I've got access to a relationship with God and people in a way that everybody else wants, but they don't know how to get it.'"
