Oprah Winfrey put on a surprise birthday party for Gayle King in celebration of her 70th birthday. Footage from the event shared by Winfrey on social media highlighted King’s astonished reaction to the star-studded affair organized in her honor.
“My bestie of 50 years is turning 70 so we gathered everyone that loved her to celebrate,” wrote the Beloved actress on Instagram. In the clip uploaded, King is escorted into the venue by Winfrey and immediately jumps back, throwing down her handbag as guests enthusiastically scream “surprise.”
“Hard thing to surprise her, O the stories we have made up, the lies we have told to keep this a secret. Happy birthday @gayleking, sorry we almost gave you a heart attack,” concluded the caption, adding the crying laughter emoji.
On her account, the veteran journalist recapped the experience from the birthday girl’s point of view, sharing multiple pictures and videos from the glamorous event.
“Talk about a surprise !!! I thought I was going to @oprah’s holiday dinner,” explained King on Instagram in one caption. “Unbeknownst to me it was a surprise party six months in the making and I had no idea! Everybody kept the secret which made this party even more special to me! More to come,” she wrote in another upload.
Guests included her children Kirby Bumpus, and William Bumpus Jr., Tina Knowles, Dave Chappelle, Sherri Shepherd, David Oyelowo, Angela Bassett, Kevin Liles, Niecy Nash, and more.
“@oprah is theeeeeeee best of the best! There will be no words to properly thank her for my 70th extravaganza,” exclaimed King.
“I feel like she gave me the party I wanted HER to have back in January. It was a good ole fashion dance party with dancing and food and good friends. I rarely feel like the belle of the ball but I sure did that night….. still floating.”
