Southern Charm matriarch Patricia Altschul has sold her sprawling Charleston mansion. But she’s not going anywhere.
On Season 10, Episode 4 of the show, Miss Patricia sat in her familiar living room with Whitney Sudler-Smith. I miss seeing butler Michael Kelcourse serving her cocktails in that room.
“Since you now own all of this, I have things for you to be responsible for,” she told her son.
Whitney bought his mother’s home to avoid taxes
Thank goodness the iconic home is staying in the family!
In a show confessional, Patricia explained how Whitney became the owner of the 9,500-square-foot historic home. The 10-bedroom Isaac Jenkins Mikell house in Charleston’s Historic District was built in the 1850s.
“Several years ago, we had a meeting with our lawyers and estate planners and money manager,” she said. “They said when I kick the bucket, Whitney is gonna have to pay–I don’t know–46 percent in [inheritance taxes]. Something extraordinary.”
Though Patricia bought the home in 2008 for $4.8 million, she estimates its current worth to be around $15 million. “So we decided that Whitney should buy the house from me and put it in his own trust.”
Now that Whitney owns the home, Patricia educated him on all the home tasks he is responsible for.
“There are things that are seasonal,” she began in a confessional. “For example, the gardeners … and the landscapers. There are a million things to keep up an old home. For example, in the spring, you have the buy lilies at a certain place for the pond.”
“Did you ever anticipate when we got this house what a money pit it would be?” her son asked. “Or has that completely evaded any kind of logistical reasoning?”
Not to worry! “You can afford it,” his mother quipped.
Whitney takes us on a tour
In the video above, Whitney shows off his home’s “English country aesthetic” and its 18th-century decor. Oddly enough, I don’t see any of Craig Conover’s pillow line included in her room decor.
The well-manicured backyard is especially lovely. “You can see why I love to hang out here,” Whitney says, pointing out the “formal boxwood gardens” and “rare” architecture. “You feel like you’re in a Greek temple.”
The yard has another unique trait: the swimming pool. Whitney explains why pools are something of a rarity in Charleston.
“It’s hard to build pools in Charleston these days, as they have to be grandfathered in,” he says. “This was built in the ’80s, so we’re lucky that we have a house with a pool. But not many houses in Charleston have pools because they don’t allow them.”
As Miss Pat lives out her life in the comfort of her own home, we can all be thankful that she’s still a presence on Southern Charm. To hear her tell it, she was never supposed to be there.
Southern Charm airs Thursdays at 9/8c on Bravo.
