Third time’s the charm for Patton Oswalt and the Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) Golden Reel Awards. In an Indiewire exclusive, it was announced on December 27 that the actor will return to host the 72nd annual ceremony for the third time when they’re held on February 23, 2025, at the Ebell Theater in Los Angeles.

“As a film buff, getting to highlight the ‘hidden artisans’ who create movie memories as important as any moving image is a joy for me,” Oswalt said in a statement. “I can’t wait for the show.”

Founded in 1953, the MPSE is the premier organization of entertainment sound editing professionals, and its Golden Reel Awards honor outstanding achievements in sound editing, sound design, music editing, and foley artistry in film, television, and gaming. As previously announced, the evening will include two honorary awards: Kevin Costner will receive the Filmmaker Award, and supervising sound editor Greg Hedgepath will receive the Career Achievement Award. The full nominations will be announced January 6, 2025.

“We are thrilled to welcome Patton Oswalt back to the Golden Reel Awards stage. He truly understands the power of sound in storytelling and has repeatedly expressed his appreciation and admiration for what we do as sound artists,” MPSE President David Barber said in a statement. “He brings so much fun and humor to our biggest night. The audience loves him, we love him, and his enthusiasm for sound permeates the room.”

Last year’s MPSE winners included “Oppenheimer,” “Maestro” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “32 Sounds,” and “Society of the Snow,” while TV honors went to “The Mandalorian,” “The Last of Us,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and “The Light We Cannot See.” “The Zone of INterest” ultimately won the Best Sound Academy Award.
