Paul Mescal is set to star in A Streetcar Named Desire once again after the show earned huge praise in 2022.
The iconic theatre production came to London in 2022 in a hugely popular revival that saw Mescal earn an Olivier award for his performance as Stanley Kowalski from the Tennessee Williams play.
It has now been announced that the show will be returning to London in 2025 and making a trip to the US.
Deadline announced that the actor would be returning to this role after collaborating with Ridley Scott once again in a new film, The Dog Stars.
It was reported: ‘Sources said that they found a sweet spot for the busy Mescal to re-team with Scott, and that is why they’ve set this as their next collaboration, with the aim to shoot next spring after Mescal stars on Broadway in A Streetcar Named Desire.’
It’s thought that the show take place at the Noël Coward Theatre on St. Martin’s Lane for a limited run between February 3 – 22. The show will then debut in Brooklyn for its U.S. premiere.
The tickets sold like hotcakes for the highly sought-after show directed by Rebecca Frecknall and received rave reviews.
Claire Allfree reported for Metro and praised Mescal’s performance: ‘Forget Paul Mescal as the sensitive lover who made Normal People essential watching during lockdown.
‘Here, cast as Stanley, the jealous, predatory husband in Tennessee Williams’s masterpiece, he’s the ugly, violent animating force of Rebecca Frecknall’s slowly broiling revival, pacing the stage like a tiger hungry for a fight.’
In January 2023, The Guardian also praised the performance from Mescal, commenting: ‘Mescal appears as natural on stage as on screen. He has a blank-eyed disdain for Blanche and her imperious judgments of him but we see his jealous insecurity through his rages, and that the real fight between Stanley and Blanche is for Stella’s heart.’
The reviewer, Arifa Akbar, added: ‘It is the power of these performances that gives this production its fierce and dangerous energy.’
Although there is set to be extreme excitement in the theatre community about Mescal’s upcoming performance, the star is currently receiving praise for Sir Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2.
Metro‘s film reporter Tori Brazier commented: Mescal is thoroughly believable as Lucius, capable and keeping the eddy of his fury just beneath the surface of his performance.
However, she added: ‘He proves a commendable leading man but sometimes feels a bit underdeveloped by the script and emotionally constipated.’
The film is already receiving Oscar buzz and there’s a huge amount of excitement for the blockbuster which comes 24 years after the original Russell Crowe film.
Gladiator 2 is scheduled to be released on November 15.
