Penn State Football White Out Game Headed to Imax Screens In NBC Sports Deal

NBC Sports and Imax have partnered to bring the first-ever live college football game to the giant screen exhibitor.

The Nov. 9 match-up that has the Penn State Nittany Lions hosting the Washington Huskies in the annual White Out game from Beaver Stadium will be shown live in select Imax theaters and on Peacock. Ticket sales for the Big Ten showdown in Imax theaters will be handled by Fandango.

On the sports alternative content front, Imax and NBCUniversal brought live coverage of the Olympic Games opening ceremony on July 26 to more than 150 giant-screen theaters in the U.S. as ticketed events. That had superstars Celine Dion and Lady Gaga performing on super-sized Imax screens.

Imax is diversifying its content offerings elsewhere with concerts, live presentations and gaming events. The company recently hired Jonathan Fischer as chief content officer to oversee the entertainment technology company’s content strategy around Hollywood tentpoles, international movie titles and other diversified content.

As Imax recovers from the pandemic-era disruption to the wider exhibition industry, the company has looked to diversify its core slate of Hollywood blockbuster movies with local-language titles from China, India, Japan and other fast-growing markets as well as concerts and comedy and sports events that play well in its giant theaters.

Fischer will be responsible for Imax documentaries, Imax Live events and other original theatrical experiences drawn from the music, gaming and sports worlds.

Last season, NBC Sports launched its Big Ten college football package, featuring Big Ten games on Saturday night on NBC and Peacock. The Nov. 9 White Out game will be exclusive to Peacock.
