The Philadelphia Phillies had championship aspirations in 2024. They eventually fell short after getting eliminated by the New York Mets in the NLDS. Could president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski shake up his roster by targeting Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout in a trade?
Following the Phillies' premature postseason exit in October, Dombrowski talked about having to make tough decisions to improve his roster for 2025.
"I mean, the reality is, we have a lot of good players," Domborwksi said via MLB.com's Todd Zolecki. "I think we just have to be open-minded to exploring what's out there for us, talk to some clubs and see what ends up happening. That process hasn't started. Sometimes you trade good players for good players."
Third baseman Alec Bohm and starting pitcher Ranger Suárez have been targeted on the trade market, but nothing has happened that's changed the Phillies' roster significantly for next season. Clutch Points' Jordan Llanes proposed the following "unrealistic" hypothetical trade that would bring Trout to the City of Brotherly Love:
- Phillies receive: outfielder Mike Trout
- Angels receive: outfielder Justin Crawford and starting pitcher Mick Abel
"This trade would be a win for both sides," Llanes wrote. "Crawford has quickly risen from first-round pick to impact prospect, and Abel should be able to help the major league pitching staff right away."
This hypothetical trade certainly feels like a huge overpay given the situation. While the Angels have invested in the 2025 roster with hopes of competing, Trout has had problems staying healthy in recent seasons. It's hard to see the Phillies being willing to pay what remains of Trout's $426.5 million contract in full while also giving up two top prospects.
However, it would be intriguing to see the three-time American League MVP Award winner play for a club with a serious chance of not only making the playoffs but also making a deep run.
