Few people have as much of a hold on me as Phoebe Bridgers. Maybe it’s her nonchalance or a mutual penchant for all-black outfits, or perhaps it’s the ethereal silver hair I know I could never pull off, but the singer could convince me of just about any trend.

So recently, when she was sighted around the streets of New York City sporting a tie-up bonnet, she cemented this trend as one I could finally get behind.

In SoHo, Bridgers was photographed in another monochromatic black look. Bracing the increasingly cold weather, she wore a simple outfit of a button-up top with black trousers, an oversized coat that skimmed her ankles, and tasselled loafers. To keep her head warm, she wrapped her lavender bob haircut with a black tie-up bonnet that brought an easy charm to her staples.

From Paloma Wool and GANNI to Sandy Liang and Acne Studios, we’ve seen bonnets and head scarves—or whatever you want to call them—become a mainstay of fashion. But until now, I can honestly say that their appeal has eluded me, largely due to their association with the cottagecore aesthetic and coquettish style trends that don’t quite resonate. But Bridgers’ take is different. Punk, even.

Where I had previously relegated bonnets as headgear for babies and the Scandi style set, they suddenly held fresh allure. Maybe it was the radical simplicity, but the bonnet is now firmly on my mind. Consider me influenced.

Whether you opt for a delicate iteration like the singer or one of the chunkier knit options with exaggerated ties, these unassuming accessories hold great sartorial power—and offer some mighty functional benefits to boot.

So, if you too are as easily influenced by Bridgers, shop our edit of bonnets below.
