Janusz Olejniczak, the distinguished Polish pianist and teacher who performed the piano parts in the Oscar-winning 2002 film The Pianist, has died at the age of 72, his family confirmed on Monday.

He passed away on Sunday from a heart attack.

In a statement, the family praised Olejniczak's "extraordinary musical sensitivity, especially in the interpretations of music by Frederic Chopin," which brought him international acclaim.

Aleksander Laskowski, a spokesperson for the Frederic Chopin Institute, said staff were "deeply saddened" by the loss, describing Olejniczak as "one of the most outstanding contemporary performers of Chopin's music" and an excellent educator, who made significant contributions to the classical music world throughout his life.

Composer Jerzy Maksymiuk, a personal friend, paid tribute, noting that Olejniczak's "sensitive soul and extraordinary talent transpired throughout his interpretations," where he created a "unique aura."

Maksymiuk recalled having lunch with Olejniczak on Sunday, where they spoke of his "great plans," which Olejniczak remained determined to pursue despite his health concerns.

Olejniczak's career took off in 1970 when, at just 18, he became a laureate of the 8th International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition. His striking physical resemblance to the composer even led him to portray Chopin in the 1991 film The Blue Note by Andrzej Zulawski. His natural presence on-screen and musical skill made him the ideal performer to represent the legendary composer.

In 2002, Olejniczak played the piano parts for Roman Polanski's acclaimed film, The Pianist. His hands were shown performing in the film, which won three Academy Awards, including Best Director for Polanski and Best Actor for Adrien Brody.

Olejniczak's involvement in the film brought his talent to a broader global audience and further solidified his reputation as a world-class interpreter of Chopin's music.

Newsweek has reached out to Adrien Brody for comment.

Though best known for his Chopin interpretations, Olejniczak's repertoire extended beyond the Romantic era.

He also performed contemporary music, including compositions by the late Polish composer Wojciech Kilar, showcasing his impressive versatility as a musician.

Born on Oct. 2, 1952, in Wroclaw, Olejniczak began his piano studies at the age of six. He trained in Warsaw, Paris, and Essen, and later became a respected juror at the prestigious Chopin Piano Competition.

Since 2018, he also served on the jury of the Chopin competition on period instruments. His influence and contributions will be remembered for generations to come, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the world of classical music.
