Many avocado lovers are cutting into their breakfast favourites, only to find a disappointing brown mush.
It’s a familiar outcome that wastes both food and money, but an expert has warned against placing avocados in water to maintain freshness.
Amy Lynn Cross, the culinary mastermind behind The Cross Legacy, is warning against this popular trend circulating on social media, the Express reports.
She advised: "These tips show people storing whole and halved avocados in water to keep them fresh longer. It has been all over social media. In reality, it could be making you sick."
However, there's no need to despair or dispose of your fruit prematurely - there's a safer method to preserve those avocados. Cross advises washing thoroughly to remove bacteria, drying them well, and using an air-tight container for storage.
And she has a nifty tip - a "secret elixir" for cleaning that's not just effective but economical too. Amy explained: "It's composed of two ingredients: cool water and five percent distilled white vinegar."

So before you put your avocados in the bin, consider dipping them first into a chilly bath of water mixed with 60ml of white vinegar—it could not only save your breakfast but also extend the life of your avocados up to a full month.
You'll need to set your timer for exactly two minutes before plunging the avocados in and ensure not to keep them submerged any longer, as you might end up tasting vinegar in your fruit.
When the time is up, give them a thorough rinse under the tap to wash away the vinegary mix.
Afterwards, wipe them down and let the avocados air dry until they're completely dry. Households are advised to wait until avocados are bone dry before storing them away as dampness could invite unwanted bacteria and mould.
